Erica Payne is the founder of Taproot Law. Erica started her own law firm after facing health issues while working at a traditional law firm billing by the hour. She realized the firm culture was negatively impacting her health. At Taproot Law, Erica is focused on lawyer wellness and human-centered client service. The firm uses predictable fees like flat fees rather than hourly billing. Erica explains how she is challenging other problematic aspects of traditional law firms, like pay inequality between partners and staff.
Erica shares how she is using research and data to improve client experience at her firm. For example, feedback showed that clients didn't like speaking with an out-of-state receptionist service, so Taproot Law hired a local receptionist instead. Erica also discusses new subscription services she is launching - one for lawyers to access visual aids for advising clients in areas outside their expertise, and another for clients that provides a helpline and other benefits.
On the legal operations side, Erica explains how she created segmented flat fees for litigation work by breaking down each phase and getting client agreement upfront. She emphasizes the importance of coaching clients through the process. Erica also shares the key technologies she uses to run her innovative law firm, like Canva, Calendly, Evernote and Adobe Pro.
