(73) Teaching AI to Law Students with Professor Korin Munsterman

Korin Munsterman is a law professor at UNT Dallas College of Law who teaches courses on technology and AI in the legal field. She has worked at various law schools from those seeking accreditation to top schools like Harvard. At UNT Dallas, she teaches a required legal technology proficiency course where students learn tools like document assembly, e-discovery certification, and no-code platforms. Recognizing the importance of AI, she also developed courses on social media law and AI in the law.

For the AI in the law course, Munsterman focuses on teaching students the different AI platforms like Claude, GPT-4, and BARD (renamed after this recording to Gemini), their strengths and weaknesses, and how to effectively use prompt engineering. She emphasizes understanding the ethical duties around AI like competence, confidentiality, and candor to the court. Students learn an iterative process of refining prompts and outputs. The goal is for students to become experts at prompt engineering and critical thinking about AI outputs rather than blindly trusting the technology.

Munsterman believes AI and subscription legal services can help provide greater access to justice and preventative legal services for those who cannot afford traditional legal fees. While some law faculty are resistant to students using AI, viewing it as cheating, Munsterman argues it is a disservice not to train students on tools they will inevitably use in practice.
